We keep on simplifying Math to children because we want them to like it and be good at it. That makes me wonder, however, if we are creating some serious issues about their understanding and application to Math.
When I was a child, I was taught Math the "hard way". For instance, all Math fundamentals were explained to me using a pencil and a paper. I learned to do division in couple steps, and was not allowed to use a calculator. I still enjoyed Math and was very good at it! Children today, however, are being taught to do division and multiplication in several simple steps. That makes me wonder if they would ever be able to do simple calculations in their heads if they had to one day. I'm not saying all simplification is bad. I got introduced to the Base 10 manipulatives lately, and I really encourage their usage. I strong feel, however, that tremendous simplification to matters might, in some way, limit a child's thinking. Children are smart, and they can grasp many ideas in a short period of time, so why not give them the chance to maximize their thinking abilities.
Simplifying matters is beneficial, but we need to find the limits!
